About the event

Join The Walled Garden's May Artist in Residence, Ella Clogstoun, back in the Greenhouse for a two day Lino Print Workshop, exploring medieval floral motif. During this time you will learn how to carve and print your own block. Exploring forms from the natural world and learning how to interpret them into a stylised motif inspired by the medieval period.

The two-day course will be hands-on learning for a small group of 12. It will incorporate small demonstrations of basic printmaking techniques, and one-on-one conversations on how to develop your own individual projects. Drawing inspiration from relief foliate carving from the gothic period, woodcuts of the 1500’s, elements of herbalism and symbolism from the medieval period, as well as the plants from The Walled Garden. You will then create our own blocks, looking closely at shadow and light to make a striking image and learn how to print them in various ways for different effects. All the techniques you learn, you will be able to do at home.

The workshop will be held in the greenhouse. The perfect setting for a gentle creative workshop. The fire will be lit and refreshments will be available both days; apple juice from the garden and cake, but please bring your own lunch for both days.

The course will be run by Ella Clogstoun, local Printmaker. Ella studied Painting and Printmaking at Glasgow School of Art. She then went on to work as a Historic Building Conservator, working on many churches and National Trust properties around the country. After the birth of her child, she started her own creative practice as a Printmaker. Her work is inspired by the historic buildings she grew to love, using pattern, myth and symbolism to evoke ancient other worlds gone before us.
